Meadowbrook High School (Kingston, Jamaica)
Founded March 13, 1958, by the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, Meadowbrook High is a government-aided, co‑educational secondary institution serving Grades 7 through Sixth Form. Located at 2 Meadowbrook Avenue in Kingston, it is affectionately nicknamed “M’Brook”
The School’s History
Meadowbrook High School was founded on March 13, 1958, by the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, through the vision and dedication of Rev. Henry Ward, Rev. William McGhie, and Rev. Margaret “Madge” Saunders. Their mission was clear: to provide accessible, high-quality education rooted in Christian values to a growing and diverse Jamaican society. Starting with just a handful of students and a strong sense of purpose, Meadowbrook has since grown into a respected co-educational secondary institution serving over 2,000 students from Grades 7 through Sixth Form.
From its early days, Meadowbrook has been a pioneer in promoting inclusivity, excellence, and service. Notably, it was the first Jamaican high school to enter a visually impaired student in the prestigious Schools’ Challenge Quiz competition, a reflection of its deep commitment to equal opportunity and academic excellence. The school crest—a radiant star encircled by the Latin motto “Ita Splendeat Lux Vestra” (“Let Your Light So Shine”)—symbolizes the school’s belief in the potential within every student to illuminate the world with knowledge, character, and purpose.
Over the decades, Meadowbrook High has not only kept pace with the evolving educational landscape of Jamaica but has helped shape it, producing generations of well-rounded, civic-minded graduates who continue to lead and serve both locally and globally.
